Public Vs. Private Cloud: How to Choose the best Option?
In our previous blogs, we discussed cloud computing, the importance of cloud storage and the promising tools such as Microsoft Azure, IBM Cloud computing, Oracle Cloud and Google Cloud Platform.
However, the field of cloud computing is much more than this. One such approach is choosing between public and private cloud. It is important to know the difference between these options before making a final decision as your company’s data relies on it.
PRIVATE CLOUD
As the name indicates, resources come under this category are only used by the organization independently, or in other words, the resources are not shared with other enterprise companies. An organization can host these resources either itself or may use third-party tools. In both cases, resources provided by virtual software are used by only a single organization or user. Organizations that demand high-level of service availability, optimized performance, zero-level of risks and enhanced privacy can’t tolerate on mutual sharing of resources.
Thus, a private cloud option acts as a reliable approach for such enterprises. Having complete control over data and resources allow the organization to work in a protected environment rather than working under the multi-tenant environment, also known as a public cloud environment. Hewlett Packard Enterprise, VMware, Red Hat, and Dell EMC are some standard names of private cloud option.
On the other hand, implementation of a single-tenant environment involves several hurdles, among which cost is the major one. Furthermore, it is not easy to manage the separate database as an organization holds everything by itself ranging from service availability to privacy of resources.
PUBLIC CLOUD
Through a public cloud option, an enterprise becomes care-free as every cloud computing task is managed by a third-party service provider. An organisation obtains only those resources that are highly essential instead of taking the complete package. In this way, the public cloud acts as a cost-saving approach because the user pays for only the required resources. It is simple and easy to manage under the bridge of the public cloud. Microsoft Azure, Oracle, IBM are all examples of public cloud computing.
On the flip side, public cloud options don’t support special security mechanism, which is the requirement for most of the enterprises. Since every organization is using the same resources, approaches, it becomes difficult to monitor critical functions of business under a mutually-shared environment. Businesses related to Big data approaches or perform dynamic workload can’t rely on this option.
HYBRID CLOUD
Another leading cloud computing approach is using the combination of private and public cloud, hybrid cloud computing. It has the potential of both the conventional approaches as it can move from public to private or vice versa according to the company’s requirements. It uses a private cloud option for managing sensitive and critical options and exploits the public approach for managing simple activities.
In a nutshell, it depends on the business platform and the category to which it belongs. For instance, if your company doesn’t need enhanced security protocols, then public cloud sharing would be the best option. On the other side, if the business operations are critical and you can’t take risks, then choose hybrid or private cloud option.
